THE SWORD IN THE STONE is the story of the early years of King Arthur. Nicknamed "Wart," the future King Arthur is squire to a knight when he meets Merlin the magician, who promises to take on his education. Merlin turns him into a fish, a bird, and a squirrel to teach him lessons like the importance of brains over brawn.   Many moons ago, back in the 80s I think, my father Gareth Morgan told me this tale about a theory he had created on this. Now, it’s all a little mixed up in my head by the intervening odd years, but hopefully Gareth will correct those parts I m.

Brilliant, high-level take on Arthur's childhood. Read Common Sense Media's The Sword in the Stone review, age rating, and parents guide.4/5. Sticking out of it was a huge sword. There was a message on it. It said that whoever pulled the sword from the stone was the rightful High-King of Britain. Lots of the local kings (or 'tyrants') tried to pull the sword out. It was magically stuck fast though and the arguing carried on.

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, Clyde Geronimi, David Hand. With Rickie Sorensen, Sebastian Cabot, Karl Swenson, Junius Matthews. A poor boy named Arthur learns the power of love, kindness, knowledge and bravery with the help of a wizard called Merlin in the path to become one of the most beloved kings in English history/10(86K). Get this from a library! King Arthur. The sword in the stone. [Hudson Talbott] -- By being the only person able to draw a sword from an anvil on a block of marble, a young boy proves himself to be the successor to the throne of all Britain.

“The Sword in the Stone” is often considered to be more directed toward children than the other three books of The Once and Future King, and Kay’s quest supports this claim. Kay’s and the Wart’s adventures in the Forest Sauvage are comical, enjoyable, and filled with the typical traits of a fairy tale or a children’s story: castles.

King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone is a very popular traditional tale. I think that this particular version of the book would be great for young readers because of its length, vocabulary level, and great illustrations. The sword trapped in stone, only to be freed by the forceful grip of a future king, is an essential part of the King Arthur mythology.

The question of whether there’s historical basis for Arthur in the mists of chaotic Dark Ages Britain has haunted many historians, writers, and treasure seekers. In fact, Arthur is known only by his diminutive nickname "the Wart" until the very end of the book, when Merlyn addresses him by his more famous title.

Although this book and the others are meant to go together as an epic work, "The Sword in the Stone" can easily stand alone as an enjoyable novel in its own right.
